March Madness, Real Life, and the 3 Levels of Control

When life feels unpredictable (and let’s be honest—when doesn’t it?), clarity doesn’t come from controlling everything…

There’s something about March.

The energy shifts. The brackets come out. The upsets begin. And suddenly everyone is reminded of a truth we don’t always like to admit:

You can prepare all you want… and still not control the outcome.

And honestly? That’s not just basketball.

That’s life. That’s leadership. That’s motherhood. That’s marriage. That’s business.

This month, I’ve been living that reality in a very real way.

Between navigating spring sickness, supporting my family through injuries and recovery, and continuing to lead my clients through big decisions and uncertainty… I keep coming back to one of the most important frameworks I teach:

The 3 Levels of Control

Because when life feels unpredictable (and let’s be honest—when doesn’t it?), clarity doesn’t come from controlling everything…

It comes from knowing what’s yours to carry—and what’s not.

1. Full Control

These are the things that are 100% yours.

Your effort.

Your mindset.

Your preparation.

Your decisions.

In March Madness terms?

It’s how you train, how you execute, how you show up on the court.

In life?

It’s how you respond when things don’t go your way.

👉 This is where your power lives.

2. Partial Control

These are the things you can influence—but not own.

Your team dynamics.

Your relationships.

Your clients’ decisions.

Your kids’ outcomes.

You can lead. You can guide. You can communicate.

But you cannot control the final call.

👉 This is where leadership lives.

3. No Control

And this is the hardest one.

Injuries.

Other people’s reactions.

Unexpected outcomes.

Timing.

Rejection.

Delays.

Or in March Madness terms…

The upset you never saw coming.

👉 This is where trust lives.

The Truth Most Leaders Avoid

So many high-performing leaders I work with hesitate—not because they don’t know what the right decision is…

…but because they’re trying to control something that was never theirs.

They want certainty before action.

They want guarantees before risk.

They want outcomes before commitment.

But that’s not how growth works.

And it’s definitely not how winning works.

You don’t win by controlling everything.

You win by owning what’s yours—and releasing what’s not.

A Personal Moment

This past week, sitting in the waiting room during yet another sports-related surgery in our family (yes… third in five months 😅), I had one of those quiet, grounding moments.

There was nothing I could do to control the outcome.

Not the surgery.

Not the healing timeline.

Not how it all plays out.

But I could control:

  • My presence
  • My support
  • My energy
  • My trust

And that’s the shift.

Because peace doesn’t come from control.

It comes from clarity.

Reflection Questions for You

Take a few minutes and really sit with these:

  1. What situation in your life right now feels “out of control”?
  2. What parts of it are actually within your full control?
  3. Where are you trying to control something that is only partial (or not yours at all)?
  4. What would change if you released what you can’t control?
  5. What bold decision are you avoiding because you’re focused on the outcome instead of your role?

Your March Challenge

This month, I want you to do something different.

Instead of trying to predict the outcome…

👉 Make the right decision.
👉 Own your role fully.
👉 Let the rest unfold.

Because just like March Madness

The magic doesn’t come from certainty.

It comes from showing up, taking the shot, and trusting what happens next.

Let’s Build Your Clarity

If you’re in a season where:

  • You’re facing big decisions
  • You feel stuck in overthinking
  • You’re trying to control everything (and it’s exhausting you)

This is exactly the work I do.

Inside my coaching, we build:

✔️ Clear decision-making frameworks
✔️ Confidence in uncertainty✔️ The ability to take bold, aligned action

👉 If you’re ready to stop spinning and start leading with clarity, let’s talk.

Book a strategy call or DM me “CONTROL” and I’ll reach out.

Because the goal isn’t to control everything.

It’s to become the kind of leader who knows exactly what to do—no matter what happens next.
