December often arrives like a fast-moving train. One moment the calendar is blank, and the next we’re rushing into planning, shopping, decorating, organizing, performing, hosting. We’re pulled in a thousand directions, and somewhere along the way, we convince ourselves that peace will come once the season is over. That somehow, after all the lists are checked and the lights are hung, we will finally exhale.
Peace Isn’t Something You Fight For—It’s Something You Claim
Just the other day, my coach and I were talking about this. I told her it felt like I’d been in a season where I had to fight for peace—where every moment of calm seemed temporary, and I was constantly chasing it like a moving target. She gently reminded me, “Peace isn’t something you fight for—it’s something you claim.” Her words struck me deeply, because I realized how often I’ve treated peace as a reward I have to earn instead of a choice I can make here and now.
But what if peace begins the moment we stop speeding toward it? What if slowing down isn’t laziness at all, but leadership of the soul? What if, in the midst of all the lights, the music, and the endless “to-dos,” the greatest gift we can give ourselves is simply to pause?
Give Yourself Permission to Pause
Today, give yourself permission to do just that. Notice your breath. Unclench your jaw. Drop your shoulders. Let your mind soften. Take a quiet moment to ask yourself: What is one thing I am doing out of obligation rather than intention?
Presence begins when we choose what matters over what is merely expected. So today, remove one thing from your list. Say no to something small so you can say yes to something sacred—your inner stillness. Let your calendar, your plans, and even your own expectations bend a little, just enough to create space for peace.
Let December be less about doing and more about being. Less pressure, more presence. Less striving, more savoring. That is the quiet miracle of slowing down—the gift that doesn’t wait until the season ends, but lives right here, right now, in the space you intentionally create.
Claim it. Your soul will thank you.
